From the next academic session, the Holy Quran will be taught as a mandatory topic in Punjabi schools.
According to a notice published on Friday by the Punjab Curriculum and Textbook Board, the topic of “Naazrah Quran” has been added as a distinct required subject for grades one to four.
Students will attend three to four courses each week for the topic, with a 50-point yearly test to measure their progress.
The move is in response to the Punjab Compulsory Teaching of Holy Quran Act, 2018, which mandates that the Holy Quran be taught as a compulsory topic for Muslim students in all educational institutions.
Last year, the Punjab government made the course compulsory for university students. The PCTB has begun the process of introducing the topic to students in grades six through twelve.
